How it Works

Many loyalty programmes in South Africa work on a system of points and rewards. First Group Loyalty Rewards offers special perks and benefits to its members, rewarding you with every rand you spend. Using the example below, we’ll show you how you could earn a R10 reward based a standard points-per-rand spent rewards programme.

How do I earn points?

Loyalty card programmes such as First Group Loyalty Rewards often award you a set number of points with each purchase. Here is an example of how this might work: Earn 1 point for every R1 you spend as a member of First Group Loyalty Rewards. This might change based on your status level as higher status levels often earn more points per rand spent. For example Tier 1 members might earn 1 point for every R1 spent, while Tier 2 members could earn 2 points and Tier 3 members get 3 points.

Redeeming Rewards

Since the rewards are typically recurring, the number of points per rand you’d earn at First Group Loyalty Rewards naturally increases the value of every point and leads to a greater rewards-redemption value. Let’s take a look at how this could play out across multiple tiers of membership.

Tier 1: Let’s say Tier 1 members earn 1 point for every R1 they spend. If every 250 points gets you a R10 reward, then you’re effective points redemption rate is 4.00%.

Tier 2: If Tier 2 members spend R1 and get 2 points then they would be redeeming every 250 points for a R10 reward at the rate of 8.00% back. This is double the 4.00% rate they’d be getting as a Tier 1 loyalty card member.

Tier 3: Once you make it to Tier 3 in the programme, you’d be earning 3 points for every R1 spent. When redeeming 250 points for a R10 voucher, this equates to a 12.00% rate of redemption on your points. This is triple the 4.00% earning rate of Tier 1 members and 50% more than the 8.00% rate earned by Tier 2 members.

First Group Loyalty Rewards and many other loyalty schemes in South Africa may structure the point-earning this way, with rewards subsequently issued in the form of a voucher that has a unique code. When shopping online, you’d be able to quickly apply your First Group Loyalty Rewards voucher and reduce the price of your shopping cart accordingly.

Earning Bonus Points

There also may be bonus points opportunities where you can get credit for partaking in activities that are not related to making purchases. This could be a great way to increase the value of your First Group Loyalty Rewards membership, and we’ll break this down here as well. For example, a common example that loyalty card schemes in South Africa like to offer is a signup bonus where you could see up to 500 points credited to your account just for joining. This is a great way to get you off to a strong start as you work toward earning a reward as a loyalty programme member.

  • First Group Loyalty Rewards Sign Up Bonus (95 points)
  • Follow the programme on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram (5 points)
  • Share a Facebook Post or Retweet the programme’s content (30 points)
  • Enter your birthday in your programme account profile (65 points)
  • Post a review of a recent purchase (65 points) and add a photo to that review (95 points).

  • Refer a Friend

First Group Loyalty Rewards is always looking for new members and brands in this position often offer special bonuses for referring your friends to join. When this promotion is active, you’ll find a unique referral code in your First Group Loyalty Rewards account, which you can share with your friends. When your friend joins, they would get a First Group Loyalty Rewards voucher (usually R10-R20) that can be used on a future purchase. First Group Loyalty Rewards will, as a bonus, also credit you with a voucher for the same amount.

    Points & Rewards Expiration

Generally speaking points will have an expiration period of around 12 months, especially if your account slips into inactivity. However, some programs do not subject their points and rewards to any expiration at all. First Group Loyalty Rewards may change their expiration rules from time to time, so it’s always a good idea to check their rewards website for the latest expiry information.

Missing Points for a Transaction or Visit?

One common problem among loyalty programme members in South Africa is that many people forget to identify themselves as a member when paying. First Group Loyalty Rewards may allow you to retroactively earn credit for your missing transaction. Just contact SoLoyal to get your missing points credited.

    Terms & Exclusions

First Group Loyalty Rewards, like many of the popular loyalty schemes in South Africa, may not allow you to earn points on sale items or when purchasing gift cards. However, points are typically earned when using the gift card for purchases. Their main website should have more info about that.
